Recently, Sarah Good and Tituba were taken to another jail cell.
They were put in jail for being associated with the Devil and this might as
well be some proof. As Herrick was taking them there, they both seemed to be telling
him that they were going to go to Barbados with the Devil.
When they were on the way to the jail cell, a cow was heard mooing and Tituba yelled to Sarah, “Aye sir! That’s him Sarah!”(122). "I'm here, Majesty!" Good then proclaimed. At that moment Tituba and Sarah Good seemed insane. Who assumes that a cow is Satan and that he is going to take them back to Barbados? Then Tituba yelled to the cow, “Take me home, Devil; Devil take me home!” (123) In addition, Sarah Good told Herrick, “We goin’ to Barbados, soon the Devil gits here with the feathers and the wings.” (122) It is one thing to have a belief in a cow being a Devil, but another thing to tell someone (Herrick) about it as if you were not kidding. Also, when Herrick told Tituba, “That’s not Satan, just a poor old cow with a hatful of milk. Come along now, out with you!” (123) if there was any joke played by Tituba and Sarah they would have at least stopped there and listened to Herrick. On the other hand, Tituba and Sarah continued yelling to them to take them home and that they were going to come with him to Barbados.

These acts can only come to show that Sarah Good and Tituba are no
longer “normal” or sane. Before, Tituba and Sarah Good never showed any
emotions like this but after being in jail, it has come to show that both of
them seem to be in hysterics or in a state of insanity. It should not be
shocking to see the two of these women going insane after being in jail as they
probably have never ever been in a place like that their entire life. As
many people agree, no one would assume any sort of person would be a cow as
well as trying to talk to a cow calling him Satan. In jail, a person becomes
very limited in space and activities to do as they are in a cell for a lot of
the time. Now if there is nothing to do, one may start to become bored but if
someone begins to get so bored for a long time, they may began to go insane.
The person could begin asking things that aren’t humans to take them home
because they no longer can think straight and believe that anything is “human.”
I know if I was in jail, I would not be able to survive staying as the same
person as I was before going into jail. Insanity most likely would be common
for people like Sarah Good and Tituba to have. Spending so much time in a jail
cell is not fun but also probably not healthy for a human mind.
