The Proctors: Pure Puritans, or Problematic Planters?

People of Salem you will now be able to know the truth. The truth of what was happening in court with Proctor and the others that were accused. We have been notified that Reverend Hale came to Salem thinking that his knowledge would be enough to resolve the conflict. However it was not.
Knowing that there was no such thing as witchcraft in the town, the hard part for Hale was to find out who the real culprit was. One thing that Hale knew for sure at the end was that John Proctor was not guilty, and due to that he had no reason to be hanged. Furthermore, an anonymous source told us that Hale decided to use Elizabeth in order to convince Proctor to lie. Hale believed, “Life is God’s most precious gift; no principle, however glorious, may justify the taking of it. I beg you, woman, prevail upon your husband to confess. Let him give his lie. Quail not before God’s judgment in this, for it may well be God damns a liar less than he that throws his life away for pride. Will you plead with him? I cannot think he will listen to another,” (132). Hale strongly believed that Elizabeth would be able to convince Proctor, however she believed otherwise.
A couple hours later another anonymous source heard that instead of convincing Proctor, Elizabeth was blaming herself for being a bad wife. “John, I counted myself do plain, so poorly made, no honest love could come from me! Suspicion kissed you when I did; I never knew how I should say my love. It was a cold house I kept!”(137). Here the source tells us that Elizabeth became weak and she started to break down. Instead of being strong she started burying herself with reasons of being a bad wife and a bad Puritan in general. However towards the end she did build up some courage. The source told us that she wasn’t of much help, because she kept on telling Proctor to follow his heart. “Do what you will. But let none be your judge. There is no higher judge under the Heaven than Proctor is! Forgive me, forgive me, John-I never knew such goodness in the world! She covers her face, weeping.” (137).

This showed that somehow she was telling the truth to Proctor and she was making him realize that he should do whatever he thought was right. In the end, he was the one that had to face God not anyone else. The source told us that it was hard for her to confess her feelings and tell him how she felt, but it had to be done, he had to know. Proctor had to choose whether or not to live or die. If he chose to die at least he will give his soul peace, but if he stays alive he will be riding another whole roller-coaster. Also if he stays alive all of his land will be taken away, and he will have to live under the guilt and shame of what he did. Read our main article to find out what happened to Proctor and his family.
